History
Khevsureti lies high on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus, north of the Aragvi valley. Into the early 20th century Khevsur men still wore chainmail and helmets and carried straight swords and small round shields, and travellers often compared them to medieval knights.
With the Pshavs and the Tushes, the Khevsurs guarded the mountain border of Kartli-Kakheti. Their sword-and-shield fencing was also practised as a sport and a test of skill.
