History
Lekianoba (ლეკიანობა) is the Georgian name for raids by Dagestani highlanders on eastern Georgia from the 16th to the 19th century. Georgian chronicles called these highlanders "Leki", an umbrella term rather than the name of a single people.
The raids grew as the Kingdom of Georgia broke apart and its successor states were worn down by wars with Safavid Persia and the Ottoman Empire. Raiding parties came for livestock, goods and captives, and many captives were sold at the slave market of Akhaltsikhe.
Raiders commonly carried the long double-edged Caucasian dagger, the qama or khanjali, together with a sabre. The raids weakened after Russia annexed eastern Georgia in 1801, and the last major incursion was Imam Shamil's invasion of 1854.
