History

Nursal-Bek is how Muhammad-nutsal IV (about 1730 to 1774), ruler of the Avar Khanate from 1735, appears in histories based on Georgian sources. He came to the throne as a child and led the people of Khunzakh against Nader Shah's invasion of Dagestan.

From 1750 to 1755 he led a large coalition of Dagestani communities against the kingdoms of Kartli and Kakheti, ruled by Teimuraz II and his son Erekle II. The fighting went both ways: the Georgians suffered a serious defeat in 1751, and his forces besieged Mchadijvari fortress in 1752 and 1753.

In 1755 he besieged Kvareli in Kakheti with an army reported at 20,000 to 30,000 men. After about 20 days, 206 Georgian fighters crossed the Alazani at night and fought their way into the castle with supplies, while Erekle raided the besiegers' home villages, and the coalition withdrew. He was killed in 1774 during negotiations with Fatali Khan of Quba.
