The story

Kiziqi, Kakheti, 18th century.

Raiding parties, called "Leks" in Georgian chronicles, come down from the mountains to plunder villages and take captives.

Hold the Sasakhle. Build by day, defend by night.

Raids like these troubled Kakheti for nearly two centuries. Towns such as Sighnaghi were walled for refuge, each of its 23 towers named after the village that sheltered there.
