History

Tsikhe (ციხე) means fortress. Churches and villages were often enclosed by a galavani, a ring of fortress walls, as at Gremi, Alaverdi, Nekresi and Bodbe.

In 1762 Erekle II walled Sighnaghi with about four kilometres of walls and 23 towers, as a refuge for the villages of Kiziqi.
